Axis Powers Hetalia: Fairy England (+ Progress)
I'm still reeling from how busy the end of the first month of a year was for 2009 - and the last month of a year too, which was last December, especially with the current economic downturn. But with a little bit of faith, hope, pixie dust and hopefully a few fairies to manage the finances, perhaps things will turn out fine in the future.

Axis Powers Hetalia - Fairy England 01

Unisnail, roll out!

Step 1 A preliminary sketch is done in pencil, then scanned in to Photoshop and cleaned up using Levels and Contrast.

It is set to as low as 30% in opacity and exported to SYSTEMAX Easy Paint Tool Sai.
Step 2 Using the pen tool lines are drawn over the sketch, flipping in between to see how it looks when the base layer is removed. Adjustments are made accordingly, for example, thickening Maito Gai... I mean, Arthur's eyebrows.

Often, whenever the base layer is hidden, errors in the ink/line layer can be easily traced. The 30% opacity for the base from before is to lessen the need to hide it.
Step 3 Once the inking is complete, the bottom layer is deleted, and the completely inked work is exported back to Photoshop to thicken it, or darken the color of. A spray of overlayed colors can also enhance the final look.
Step 3
The line layer is set to Multiply to allow the white base to become see-through - or left to Normal if the linework should be prominent and was already transparent to begin with.

Adding another layer, the colors are applied object by object from bottom up, building over the lines/white layer.

Note that this is considered a "base" layer, because multiple highlights and shadows will be added later to enhance the image as a whole - generally to make them look "whole", although the coloring at this moment was applied in bits and pieces according to the objects.
Step 4
Fine details, while pretty much alright with use of the default round brush tool, can be enhanced using the default Natural Brushes set Photoshop has, especially when painting minute details like flower petals - but bear in mind that the use of these brushes depend heavily on how you want the object to look. Flowers with coarser petals, like lilies or daisies can bear the use of these brushes. But certain flowers I find a little trickier, so I grain it with smaller Default round brushes.

Well, to be honest, I just wanted to talk more about flowers. *Cough* Hmm.

Anyway, there is a subtle difference as to how a painted picture would look using default rounds and the default Natural Brushes, as in the flower, and the snail. Generally, default rounds are good enough for final details like glows.
Step 5 Obligatory UnicornSnail picture.
I use filters heavily for finishing, and I randomly use them. Photoshop has a range of default filters that cater very well for a grainy and 'traditional' look of a picture.
Well then, it's all done.

I love your art, it's just amazing. The details, the colors, and textures... This fairy!England turned me woobity.

I really enjoyed seeing your step-by-step too! :D (May I ask... you traced over the pencil lines again, freestyle, with "pen" or how does the pen tool work? ?_?;)

Thank you very much... though I don't find it amazing, there are plenty of mistakes here. I'm glad it looks alright, though, thank you kindly.
Woobity! I like that word! :D

Hmm, this is a tricky question because of the two different programs. The Pen tool in Systemax Sai is freehand, but the one in Photoshop is by using paths and anchors. I use the freehand one in Sai. In Photoshop, if we want to freehand, we probably need to use a Paintbrush tool.

You're welcome, I'm glad it helped somewhat... despite it being rather lean for a 'tutorial'. @__@; Pretty much skin-and-bones, so I'm calling it a 'progress'. ;)

I'm sure you'll improve; why, there's only room for improvement out there, isn't there! :D Thanks so very much.

Well, here's also a resource site I think you might like: http://www.dwphotoshop.com/photoshop

This is awesome! So much detail (especially on that snail shell) and your flowers are so pretty!

Thanks for the tutorial, I always love seeing how people color so I can learn from them |D

Out of curiosity, how do you get your shadows to gradient? Like on the snail shell, where it seems to turn from reddish to bluish?

Thanks very much! I'm glad they're alright. :)

Ha ha ha ha, I'm really embarrassed that a lot of people are calling it a tutorial, when it's hardly one, a solid one at all.

Oh, that... that's simply painting with different colors. Kinda like how you use watercolors. Photoshop's a reminiscent of traditional coloring, so it was simply using the colors and color picker as I went along. If you have a stylus, the pressure is applied automatically. If you don't, just set the opacity of the layers or brush to a lower one. This was taught to me by [info]yrindale. You might want a peek at his art and tutes; he's a really good artist.

Thanks very much. I'm glad it looks somewhat alright. :) Nothing amazing though...

Golly, that's the trickiest question I've gotten so far. @___@; I don't know, I'm filter-crazy; I buy them, download them and have used almost every default filter. But normally I simply love the Filter > Artistic or Filter > Texturizer ones (default on PS6.0), so perhaps those work for a grainy feel? Sorry, I'm bad at this...

I believe I used about 10 filters on this... I can't even remember the number.

You're welcome, I'm glad it shed's a little light on tricky brushes. :) Oh, inking... I use a 1200 to 1500px/h for it. Generally just around there. Then I zoom in. I work on a WinXP/Pro for this since Sai is a Windows-oriented program.

I'm glad you're happy! Your icon seems flabbergasted about it, though. ;)
