Axis Powers Hetalia: Fairy England (+ Progress)
I'm still reeling from how busy the end of the first month of a year was for 2009 - and the last month of a year too, which was last December, especially with the current economic downturn. But with a little bit of faith, hope, pixie dust and hopefully a few fairies to manage the finances, perhaps things will turn out fine in the future.
Axis Powers Hetalia - Fairy England 01
Unisnail, roll out!
| Step 1 | ![]() |
A preliminary sketch is done in pencil, then scanned in to Photoshop and cleaned up using Levels and Contrast. It is set to as low as 30% in opacity and exported to SYSTEMAX Easy Paint Tool Sai. |
| Step 2 | ![]() |
Using the pen tool lines are drawn over the sketch, flipping in between to see how it looks when the base layer is removed. Adjustments are made accordingly, for example, thickening Maito Gai... I mean, Arthur's eyebrows. Often, whenever the base layer is hidden, errors in the ink/line layer can be easily traced. The 30% opacity for the base from before is to lessen the need to hide it. |
| Step 3 | ![]() |
Once the inking is complete, the bottom layer is deleted, and the completely inked work is exported back to Photoshop to thicken it, or darken the color of. A spray of overlayed colors can also enhance the final look. |
| Step 3 | ![]() ![]() |
The line layer is set to Multiply to allow the white base to become see-through - or left to Normal if the linework should be prominent and was already transparent to begin with. Adding another layer, the colors are applied object by object from bottom up, building over the lines/white layer. Note that this is considered a "base" layer, because multiple highlights and shadows will be added later to enhance the image as a whole - generally to make them look "whole", although the coloring at this moment was applied in bits and pieces according to the objects. |
| Step 4 | ![]() ![]() |
Fine details, while pretty much alright with use of the default round brush tool, can be enhanced using the default Natural Brushes set Photoshop has, especially when painting minute details like flower petals - but bear in mind that the use of these brushes depend heavily on how you want the object to look. Flowers with coarser petals, like lilies or daisies can bear the use of these brushes. But certain flowers I find a little trickier, so I grain it with smaller Default round brushes. Well, to be honest, I just wanted to talk more about flowers. *Cough* Hmm. Anyway, there is a subtle difference as to how a painted picture would look using default rounds and the default Natural Brushes, as in the flower, and the snail. Generally, default rounds are good enough for final details like glows. |
